Jarracharra Indigenous Textile Exhibition

The Mata Foyer in the Australian Pavilion is proud to showcase a powerful collection of Aboriginal women’s textile art from the Maningrida region in Western Arnhem Land, Australia, Jarracharra Indigenous Textile Exhibition.

The textiles are inspired by Jarracharra; a term in the Burarra language, which represents the way the Bábbarra Women’s Centre brings together different Aboriginal cultures and stories from across Arnhem Land. Jarracharra is known as the powerful cool wind that blows across Arnhem Land each dry season, which is very important between clans as it signifies the beginning of a period of exchange. The artists featured in Jarracharra often speak/ understand more than six living Aboriginal languages and share complex ceremonial links with all neighbouring groups.

These textiles have been hung together cohesively as one body in the same manner diverse artists operate together as one family at Bábbarra. This textile display is in addition to the multiple indigenous artists Australia features and celebrates through out the Pavilion which tells a story of indigenous identity and power. Showcasing artists including Susan Marawarr, Sonia Namarnyilk , Raylene Bonson, Melba Gunjarrwanga, Belinda Kuriniya and many more incredible women, this exhibition is not one to be missed.

This display is open for the public for four days only, so come down and see this exquisite traditional artwork while immersing yourself in Aboriginal culture.
